RAL Color System
What Is RAL?
RAL is a European color standard managed by RAL gGmbH, a subsidiary of the German RAL Institute. First published in 1927, the system was created to standardize color definitions for industrial applications, eliminating ambiguity in color communication between manufacturers, architects, and suppliers.
RAL is the dominant color specification system in Europe for architecture, construction, powder coating, and industrial manufacturing. It's especially prevalent in specifying colors for building facades, window frames, metal structures, machinery, and safety signage.
RAL Subsystems
- RAL Classic — The original collection of 213 colors, organized into ranges (1000s = yellows, 2000s = oranges, 3000s = reds, etc.). The most widely used subsystem.
- RAL Design — A larger, systematically structured collection of 1,825 colors organized by hue, lightness, and chroma. Used for more precise architectural specification.
- RAL Effect — 490 solid colors and 70 metallic colors, including environmentally friendly formulations based on waterborne paint systems.
RAL in Architectural Paint
RAL is the go-to specification system when architects and builders need to communicate exact colors for exterior cladding, metal fixtures, window frames, railings, and industrial finishes. Most European paint manufacturers can mix any RAL Classic code on demand.
